Sesame balls &Workshop 07.01.2024


Big thanks to Jing who shared her sesame ball recipe with us at this event.

This is probably the most popular New Year's dessert and it happens to be vegan.




Ingredients for the sesame balls


For 8 pieces

Boiled water 60g

Add sugar 25g to water until it melts


A bowl of sesame seeds(not roasted)

Some extra rice flour to modify dough

A pot of heat stable oil (for frying )



Step1

Add the sugar water to flour, mix well.




Add about another 10g flour until the dough is not too wet.

Add 1g oil (1/4 tsp).

Cover with plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out.

Rest the dough for 0.5 h


STEP2

Tear the dough into 8pieces.

Add red bean paste filling into the dough, make it a ball.






STEP 3

Mix some water and sticky rice flour.(or just water)

Wet the ball in it.


STEP4

Take the ball to a bowl of sesame seeds.

Use the hand to help so that the ball is fully covered with sesame seeds.




STEP 5

Put the ball into oil when the oil is not so hot (about 120°), use a big spoon or spatula to help so it does not sink to the bottom.



When it floats to the top, press it to help expand.

Fry it for 8-10 minutes until golden brawn.
